Google AdSense Tips and Tricks

The Google AdSense solution is used by millions of web masters around the world. Some of them have great success and good income, while others get only a few dollars.
Here we will share some basic tips which are known to help increase the revenue generated through Google AdSense.
First, you should choose the advertisement block format which best suits your web site visual style. The experience shows that the 336x280 Large Rectangle, the 300x250 Medium Rectangle, and the 160x600 Wide Skyscraper are the most effective shapes. Still, you should mind the visual appearance of your web pages when you insert the AdSense code. If you have a little space for ads, the best solution will be the link unit format.
Additionally, you should pick the most suitable color palette for your ads block. If you have a light background on your web site, it is better to use a similar light palette for the AdSense box. The contrast choice for an ads box palette is good only for web sites with dark background. Still, it is better to pick a color which already exists in your web site.
It is better to create an ads unit which includes both text and images. In this way both will be displayed and this will increase the chance to get a click on an advertisement by a web site visitor.
Next, you should consider the location of the ads on your web pages.
Probably the best position of the advertisements is in the top / header of your site. However, this can break the consistency of your content, so you should be careful using such a solution. Other good locations are just below the navigation bar, above the footer and in the left menu area. You should always put yourself in the visitors' shoes and look to the web site from their point of view. If the ads block makes you feel uncomfortable while browsing the web site, you should consider a different position or formatting.
Additionally, you should define the number of the advertisement units per page. There are some restrictions about it. You are allowed to have up to three advertisement units per page (in addition to three link units and three referral units). If you have a web site with a lot of content, which requires the visitors to scroll down the pages or you manage a forum or a blog, it is wise to put more AdSense blocks. However, always make sure that the main unit which will generate the major part of the revenue is loaded first in the web site source code. In case you wonder, if you place more than 3 ads units on a page only the first 3 will appear.
Detailed instructions on how to improve the efficiency of your AdSense blocks can be found in the Google AdSense resources section:

Does Google AdSense Work?

  1. How It Works

    • Google AdSense displays contextual ads on your page, the content and appearance of which you can control with filters and design elements. According to Google, you earn money by displaying AdSense ads on your pages and by visitors to your site clicking the ads.

    AdSense Reports

    • AdSense offers a service called Reports, which allows you to see how much ad revenue you have generated and estimate how much you will earn. However, one of the downsides is that AdSense does not offer information about the actual share of ad revenue that you earned.

    Threshholds and Payment

    • Google AdSense currently has two thresholds: In the United States, the company asks you for your tax information and payment preference when you've reached $10 in AdSense earnings and sends payment once you've reached $100 in AdSense earnings.

    Optimization and Demos

    • To help you increase revenue, Google offers a page of optimization tips (see Resources below), which help you design and implement an individualized AdSense plan. Google also offers beginners a full page of demonstrations on how to work through the AdSense process (see Resources below).

    Expectations

    • Earnings will vary widely based on traffic to the site on which you have installed AdSense. Unless you have a very high-traffic, popular website, you may never see a Google AdSense payment. Even if you do occasionally make money, you should not view it as a steady source of income. Nevertheless, AdSense does (under its Resources tab) keep track of its users' success stories--some of whom have found the service very profitable.

How Does Google Adsense Monitor Clicks for Invalid Clicks?

  1. IP Address Checking

    • Every time you log in to your Google Adsense account to edit your information or check your site's statistics, Google records the IP address of the computer you are using. Then, if a high number of ad clicks come from the same IP address, Google will usually flag your Adsense account since there is evidence that you are clicking on your own site's ads. Even if you log out of your Adsense account before clicking on ads, your IP address does not change and Google will likely consider all clicks from that IP address as invalid.

    Internet Cookies

    • When you click on an advertisement hosted by Google Adsense, an Internet cookie is placed on your computer to track your activity on the advertised site. As a result, Google can use the cookie information to see if you are clicking on a high number of ads or clicking on the same ad multiple times. If this is the case, Google will usually mark those clicks as invalid.

    Click-Through-Rate

    • Each Google Adsense advertisement that you place on your website tracks two different statistics: page impressions and clicks. Every time a page with an Adsense ad is loaded or reloaded in a web browser, another page impression is counted. A click is only recorded when a web visitor actually clicks on the advertisement and views the associated page. The click-through-rate is determined by dividing the number of clicks by the number of page impressions. If Google finds that your pages have an abnormally high click-through rate (usually more than 10 percent), your account may be flagged and checked for invalid clicks.

How to Increase Clicks on Google Ads

Google's AdSense program allows amateur and professional website owners with high-quality content to display advertisements that allow a website to generate income. For your website to earn money through AdSense, however, readers must click the advertisements you display. If you are new to AdSense, you may find that the click-through rate of your advertisements is low and that your website earns little money. A good AdSense CTR depends on ad relevancy, design and positioning. Change these elements to improve your AdSense performance

nstructions

    • 1
Write keyword-rich content for your website. Google AdSense scans your website and displays advertisements that match the keywords that your articles use. If Google is unable to determine the correct advertisements to display, your readers may see generic ads -- or no ads at all. If you run an article through a text analysis tool, you should clearly be able to determine its topic from the most common words and phrases.
    • 2
Select colors for your AdSense units that blend well with the design of your website. Google allows you to customize the background, text and link colors of each AdSense unit, and a unit that looks the same as the rest of your website will look like website content rather than sticking out as an advertisement -- which readers will naturally look away from.
    • 3
Try different AdSense unit sizes and locations. Google offers AdSense units units ranging from the large 728-by-90 pixel Leaderboard to the 125-by-125 pixel Button. If you find that an AdSense unit is performing poorly on your website, change the size and place it in a different location. For example, the 160-by-600 pixel Wide Skyscraper is intended for a website's sidebar area, while the 468-by-60 Banner tends to fit well at the top or bottom of an article.
    • 4
Place AdSense units next to the most important content on a page. Visitors are likely to look at a website's navigation bar and article titles. Most readers will read the beginning of an article, but not all will read the article through to the end. Therefore, an advertisement above the primary content of a page tends to achieve a high CTR because most visitors will look at it before leaving the page.

How to Add Google AdSense to Your Website

Google AdSense is a advertising program that allows webmasters to place advertisements on their sites. Once the ads are placed on a site, the website owner can make money every day through users who visit and click on the ads. The more AdSense ads the web owner builds, the greater the amount of money he can make. To add AdSense to your website, you'll need to first go to the AdSense site and fill out an application for an account

Instructions

    • 1
Log into your AdSense account. If you don't have an account, register for one at the AdSense website (see Resources).
    • 2
Click the tab that says "AdSense Setup."
    • 3
Choose the product you want--AdSense for Content or AdSense for Search.
    • 4
Go through the prompts for the product you selected by answering questions on things like ad format and color. Click "Continue."
    • 5
Click "Submit and Get Code" on the last page of the questionnaire.
    • 6
Copy the HTML code that appears on the next page.
    • 7
Paste the code between the HTML and body tags of your website template's HTML. If you are using a WYSIWYG editor like Dreamweaver or Front Page, paste the code into the Code or Source View because pasting it in the layout view will result in HTML tags being added to your code, according to Google.

How to Add Google AdSense to Your Blog

Google's AdSense advertising network allows website owners and bloggers to place ads similar to those displayed in Google search results on their own websites. Google pays the site owner a portion of the revenue earned from page views and clicks on these ads. If you want to monetize your blog by placing AdSense ads on your pages, you must first set up an AdSense account and then create your ad units.

Instructions

    • 1
Apply for an AdSense account using your Google ID or create a new Google ID for use with your AdSense account. Check your email inbox after you submit your application; Google will send an email soon after you apply, and you must click a link in the message to confirm your AdSense application and send it for review. Once submitted, it can take a few days to a week or more for the AdSense team to approve your account.
    • 2
Log in to your AdSense account once the account is approved. Click the "My Ads" tab on the main AdSense interface to view your AdSense ad units. You won't have any ad units yet, so click the "Content Ads" option on the sidebar, and then click the "+New" link to begin creating a new ad unit for your blog.
    • 3
Customize your ad unit. Give it a name, select an ad unit size, ad type, color scheme and other customization options on the "New Ad Unit" setup page. Ideally, you should select a 728-by-90 ad unit for your initial ad unless you have another size in mind. Consult the preview pane to view changes to your ad unit as you make them. Once you are satisfied, click the "Save and Get Code" button to save your ad unit and obtain the code that you will need to implement the ad. Click your mouse inside the box containing the ad code and press “Ctrl-A” on your keyboard to select the code if it is not already selected. Press "Ctrl-C" to copy the code to your system clipboard.
    • 4
Navigate to your blog and log in to the administrative dashboard or control panel. Then, open the "index.php," "home.php" or similarly named file that represents your blog’s home page in your blog layout editor. If the blog is hosted on your own website, you may be able to edit the files directly from the site's file manager or via an FTP connection.
    • 5
Look through the code on your blog page and locate the "<div>" code that opens the header or content area of your blog. If you have specific text in your header or at the top of the content area, you can find it quickly by pressing "Ctrl-F" to access your browser or file editor's text search function. Click at the bottom of the header code or at the top of the content area code, and then press "Ctrl-V" to paste the ad code into your page. Save the page.
    • 6
Load your blog in your Web browser. Take note of the position of the ad that you just inserted into the page; it should appear below the header of your blog or at the top of the content area. Make adjustments to your ad code, such as adding center-justified paragraph tags or other HTML or PHP code as needed to position the ad exactly where you want it. Google ads might not display immediately; instead, generic ads may appear until Google has properly indexed your blog to optimize ad content.
    • 7
Create additional ad units to place in your blog, repeating the above procedure. You can add a banner ad to the left or right side of your blog's content area, or you can use 350x350 square ads to fill space between your blog roll and other sidebar content. An additional horizontal banner can be placed halfway down the screen between blog posts to increase ad visibility without overwhelming your visitors.
    • 8
Open the PHP file that you use to generate individual blog post pages and repeat the ad placement procedure on that page, too. This will insert ads into individual blog posts, ensuring that AdSense ads will display even if visitors reach your blog from external links and don't actually view your blog’s home page.
